The Most Under Utilized Shot in Golf….

As we continue to develop wedges with various different lofts, bounces (grinds) and materials or  perhaps because golfer’s don’t practice different shots and they revert to an easier type shot such as the texas wedge/putter because they can’t chip.  A large number of golfers fail to realize the simple use of an 8 iron bump and run shot can produce effective results and due to these issues I feel it’s the most under utilized shot in golf.  The majority of high and mid handicappers should practice this shot and  make sure it can always be your “go to” shot before moving into other wedge specialty shots. These specialty shots are much more difficult to master or put in your bag of shot options when choosing or making the correct decision around the green.  This is mainly because they’re so concerned about being able to spin it with their wedges rather than the actual outcome.  No doubt there is an ego thing that goes along with the ability to check it and make the pretty shot but it’s really not that necessary in the majority of situations.  Simply said “the longer the ball is on the ground the more control you have over it”, there’s less variables involved and definitely less mechanics.  The illustrations and article below should help you gain a better understanding of how to execute this particular shot.  If you have any questions, please consult myself or your local CPGA or PGA professional.

Remember on the 1st Tee to “DRIVE”…

So, many times on the first tee the nerves set in and you don’t know what to do about them.  There’s people behind you watching and all you’re really worried about is screwing up in front of them. Well, here’s a good acronym that your sure not to forget. Just remember when you’re on the first tee to “DRIVE”.  Follow a pre-shot routine and figure out your objective.  Let’s start with “D” Define, Choose the shape of shot that fits the hole best, play to your strength.  “R” Review that this is the best possible route to take and stick with your decision. “I” Internalize and believe in yourself that you are awesome and you’re going to rip this shot down the middle of the fairway and get off to a great start.  A positive attitude is a must to get through to the end of the “Drive.”  “V”  Visualize Try and see the shape of the shot, pick a target well beyond anything on the hole in line with where you want your ball to end up, a tree, a telephone pole, the peak of a house, a window, aim towards it, you’ll never get it there, but if you see your ball flying towards it you know it will end up in great position. Ah, finally “E” Execute to the best of your ability, this is all we can ever ask of ourselves and accept the outcome.  Accepting the outcome or result is a huge issue that golfers/people fail to overcome which bleeds into poor shot after poor shot as they dwell on it for a few holes. Think about these next time you play, let me know how it goes. If you have any questions drop me a line or feel free to comment or consult your local CPGA or PGA professional.

Why you should take Golf Lessons Indoors…

Why you should take Lessons Indoors…

The simple fact or reasoning for taking lessons indoors is that you will be less focussed on the outcome or result and more focussed on the process. You’re trying to learn a specific sequence of events in the golf swing. The most important thing golfers’ forget is that they’re actually making a movement which is causing the outcome, not the outcome defining the swing motion. Golf Town’s V1 video analysis system along with my teaching philosophies will help you ascertain what your looking for out of the game. Whether it’s to get better so you can play decent Corporate Golf, Compete against a friend or just beat the golf course, or if you’re just taking up the game it’s a fantastic way to learn new concepts. Lessons are the key to “learning” how to make those brand new clubs work effectively. So, get your game on  at Golf Town with Jason Helman and  load a GIFT CARD up for that next special occasion. Makes a great Christmas Gift.

Hover the Club…

This is a great article by David Leadbetter.

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-instruction/2010-04/david-leadbetter-hover

I often teach this to my students but not for the reasons or methods that David promotes.  A large number  of students bounce the club head off the ground and then into the ball in which we refer to as a “drop kick.”  I utilize this drill in helping them return to the point of address correctly.  Where is the ball?  Is it in the air or on the ground?  It’s in the air when on the tee.  So, this is the point or level we want to return to so we can find the bottom of the swing arc, it just happens to be in mid-air this time as opposed to the ground.  If you try this it will help you eliminate hitting the ground first and promote you picking the ball off the tee and finding the club face properly.
