Golf 911 featuring Jason Helman and student @fairwaystevie Steve Waxman

Here is a little mini-series put together from writer and columnist Steve Waxman.  He approached me to do this series and challenged himself to see if he could improve his game through quality coaching and a commitment to practice.  I agreed to jump on board and we got to work.

Over the course of the summer we shot a few videos to help Steve Waxman find his way back to a single digit handicap.   His initial goal was to be consistent in the low to mid 80’s but, he worked very hard and a couple of weeks after his first coaching session he went from shooting in the 90’s back into the 70’s firing 79 in one of his first few rounds.  After our second coaching session that focussed on chipping he continued with a solid round and after our putting session he was still hanging out in the low 80’s as his skill development progressed.  Feel free to check out a couple of our videos to see what we addressed to improve Steve’s skills.

It’s important to understand that learning and developing skills are two very different things.  We can gain the knowledge and have a learned concept of what is supposed to happen but until we develop that set of skills and have the ability to maintain those skills for a period of time our expectations really need to be managed.  We hope you enjoy the videos.

Jason Helman in Golf Academy of America TV Commercial on Golf Channel

Hey everyone,

Just thought I’d give you a heads up on a recent commercial I shot for the Golf Academy of America.  As many of you may know I’m a graduate and was proud to appear as a success story for this advertisement. The Golf Academy of America gave me a solid foundation to build my career in the golf industry. I was educated by some incredible instructors such as Brad Turner, Charlie King and the late Conrad Rehling to name a few.  They all inspired me to set goals and reach for the future, it took sometime to reach a few pinnacles of success but the last few years have really paid off.  I would encourage anyone looking at entering the golf business to enroll themselves in the academy.  Check out the TV commercial in the link below for some previous graduate successes and achievements.

Jason Helman

Tip It Up Golf Talk Radio & Tour Commissioner Mike Brown of The Cactus Tour

We had the opportunity to chat with Mike Brown, Tour Commissioner of The Cactus Tour to discuss how he’s growing the women’s game. This tour has been operating for 6 years and is a very viable option for players in several different categories. It’s great for players out of college to test themselves in a different arena on the professional level playing for money. As with most mini tours you may look at it as your own money, but its always better to look at these tournaments as the glass is half full, in that you’re playing for the rest of the fields money. It’s kind of like you have a private match with the rest of the field. It’s also a great place for players without status on the Futures Tour or LPGA to sharpen up their game for qualifying schools, Monday qualifying or test themselves against some other LPGA tour professionals.  One thing is for certain it’s really important for players to “learn” how to WIN.  This tour certainly provides for that opportunity.  I would encourage any women seeking or already participating in golf at this level or hoping to in the future to take the opportunity to help grow the game.  There is a platform here, take advantage of it, the more players that participate the bigger the purse and notoriety for women’s golf. Establish yourself as a winner on this tour and work your way to “Living The Dream” as we golfer’s like to say.

Check out my comments on Tiger’s return.  A little pessimistic on the score but given the last round at Sawgrass, the severity of his unknown injury and the last round at Firestone last year I ventured to the high side. Sorry Tiger. Cost me a Guinness.

PSP Golf – The Little One (Demo Day)

We spent a great day at the Wyndance Golf Club, a ClubLink facility showing off the product.  When it comes to teaching aids, I’m fairly particular as it’s very important that my students get the proper  feedback in order to develop their skill set. This product does a great job of grooving tempo, smoothing transition and building confidence.  Check out our video and customer testimonials below.

Pre-Shot Routine “DRIVE & PUTT” Acronym’s

Here is a quick overview on a few of my thoughts on developing a pre-shot routine.  If you’ve ever had first tee jitters this is sure to help, if you’ve ever been nervous over putts this is sure to help.  Check out the following video for more info.  I tried to keep this more energetic for you. Enjoy.

Drain-O Putting Training Aid Product Review

DRAIN-O PUTTING TRAINING AID

Check out this training aid.  It’s a fantastic product that really helps in developing skill and mechanics for swinging the putter on a proper arc.  It has three different style settings of arcs, full arc, mid arc and more of a straight back and straight through arc (really only good for very short putts, I would say 6 feet or less).  So, it’s easy to find what feels comfortable and creates an entire different feel if you haven’t been working on specific mechanics in your stroke. This product will help you groove a correct putting stroke and help you repeat it.  If you want to be more consistent you have to balance your mechanics, feel and imagination to be a great putter.  You’ll notice in the video that I place the guide inside the rail so that the path cannot deviate and if it does the guide will scrape along the rail.  It’s important to try and keep it quiet. This training aid will help you get where you want to go in a hurry and that’s making more putts.  Check it out.

These are just a few of my brief thoughts on putting.  Jason Helman Golf  is here to coach you to a better game.

SAM BalanceLab – Lefty Testing

Force Plates at The Golf Lab – Lefty Bare Foot Testing

Here is a little video on the usage of the SAM BalanceLab. This technology is incredible to quickly evaluate and point out any causes or effects that may be hindering a player’s expected outcome. Power is generated from the ground up and out through our body, this is where all golfers’ should start to improve their abilities.  If you can’t manage your balance it’s pretty tough to be consistent, good balance is a derivative of proper address posture and maintaining efficient dynamic posture.  This technology is available to you through The Golf Lab. (When looking at the video, the “green” foot is the right foot and the “red” foot is the left, located on the bottom center of the monitor, for lefties we load into our left if there’s weight shift, these are two very different swings as you will notice in the results)

The system has taken biomechanical weight transfer analysis technology to the next level by giving the golf instructor or golfer the ability to:
  • See precise weight distribution for right and left foot
  • See precise weight distribution for heel and toe
  • See instant feedback in a simple and informative, layout
  • Watch live data in both 3D and 2D views
  • Calculates the Center-of-Gravity and shows data in real time
  • See and review a video recording of the swing that is in-sync with the weight transfer data
  • Replay mode gives user the ability to view data in slow motion and in a single step mode

Perfect Release Training Aid Review – Jason Helman Golf

I’m very fussy when it comes to training aids in buying them and utilizing them, I really only have about 6 or 7 that I use on a consistent basis.  I’ve found that quite a few really don’t provide any benefit at all.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth with the Perfect Release Training Aid.  It has multiple usages and benefits that will improve students almost immediately, so just imagine after they groove the usage how much better they’ll become.  The inventor James Burke really has something special here.  I’ve used it everyday in some way for various students since I purchased it. Enjoy the review.  This particular student is coming off a broken rib and has only swung a club twice since October.  He enjoyed the teaching aid so much, because he could see and feel the results he wanted to give a testimonial at the end.
